Voice over Bridge to a healthy mind? What the heck does that mean little bird? Hang onto your feathers and I’ll explain. But first, a simple question.

Ever Wanted to Learn to Play Bridge?

I remember my Granny playing Bridge. Maybe that’s what springs to mind when you think about it – previous generations. But bridge isn’t just for the old y’know! Turns out it’s for everyone. And not just that, it’s good for you, too. In a fractured world dominated by screens, a shared focus that brings people of all generations together has to be a good thing. According to the Campaign to End Loneliness, in 2022, 49.63% of adults (25.99 million people) in the UK reported feeling lonely occasionally, sometimes, often or always. The thing is, loneliness isn’t just restricted to adults, which is why Bridge can be a brilliant thing. It brings people of all generations and cultures together. It requires strategic thinking and communication too, so it’s also also an opportunity to give your brain a bit of a workout.

What About that Voice Over Bridge to a Healthy Mind?

Ah, well a couple of months ago, I received an email from a professor at the University of Stirling, and an organisation called BAMSA, which stands for Bridge: A Mind Sport for All. BAMSA is researching the benefits of bridge, and using its findings to update the image of this mind sport. Not all sport has to be physical, after all. If you’re a dog lover, you’ll know that mental stimulation tires them out far more quickly than a good long walk! BAMSA were producing a series of videos to encourage young people to learn Bridge, though the series is for everyone. So, they needed a voiceover that would appeal across the board, but particularly to the young. That’s where this little bird comes in. The Voiceover Bridge to a healthy mind.

This is the first video, you can see the entire series here.

Behind the Scenes of the Voice Over Recording.

The deadline was tight, so this job was a very fast turnaround for all ten explainer videos. Not only that, but the pace, pitch and tone had to match the original Norwegian voiceover to the second. The entire series was self-recorded and then sent off to the animator. So, it was just this little bird pressing the buttons, voicing in a way that works for the audience, and hitting those timings. Thankfully, I have a lot of experience when it comes to this sort of project, and years spent voicing to the split second across tv and radio is never wasted! Everything was recorded and approved in just a few days.

Fancy a Game of Bridge? Or Need a Voice Over?

How do you feel about the game of Bridge now, I wonder? Voicing this series really made me think about the benefits of card games, especially one as challenging as this. Whether or not the cards are calling, if you’re in need of an experienced, versatile voice over artist, this little bird would love to help. You’ll find a whole raft of demo reels here if you fancy a listen. Just drop me a line for a chat.

Voiceover Bridge to a Healthy Mind - Sara Starling Voice Over with Neville Longbottom the studio dog

Oh and of course, young Neville Longbottom (still banned from the studio) may not be great at Bridge, but he’s always up for a game of frisbee, whatever the weather!
