I’ll be sharing bird wisdom, original audio, recommendations and bits of work along the way to make this flight through life that little bit more magical!
Want to know why I’m passionate about human voice over for medical, health and pharma? And why you should be, too?
Let me tell you a story. One that’s defined me, made me who I am and feeds into my deep levels of empathy and care.
A Life-Defining Story.
I’m 6 years old. My mum goes into hospital for routine surgery. She’ll be in for a night, two maximum. I’m worried, scared, missing my mum, but just one or two sleeps and she’ll be home. Won’t she?

She’s given two options. She’s adamant she wants option A . When surgery commences, the consultant ignores her wishes and goes ahead with option B. (I should add that my mum’s choice wasn’t based on nothing. Call it gut instinct, call it psychic, call it what you like, she knew things, a trait I seem to have inherited, hence the magical design woven into this website).
If only the consultant had listened, because, as my mum had feared with option B, it all went horribly wrong. As wrong as it could go. In fact, she had a near death experience, watching the total panic of theatre staff from above as she floated towards that beautiful white light. But she knew she was needed, she chose to come back for me and my sibling, crashing down to earth and into a broken body.
She was strong, determined, and knew she was needed – recovery was essential. It took a long, long time, and she was never fully 100%, though she did pretty damned well! I thank my lucky stars that she survived. It was a lot for a 6 year-old, there’s no denying it.
So, Where Does the Human Voice Over Fit In?
Experiences like that leave a deep impact. Empathy and compassion are woven into my DNA, along with a deep desire to make people feel safe, cared for, and to help them laugh along the way, too, because you’d go mad otherwise!
I grew up talking about death, and life, and all things medical. I also grew up with a real awareness of how consultants spoke to my mum and to me. I knew the difference words and tone of voice could make, for good or for ill – literally. Admittedly, for a long time I was terrified of medics, in fact, I’d faint in GP’s surgeries. I was also fascinated. I wanted to know things. I studied human biology at A level, and did a course in anatomy and physiology years later, too. Unusual for someone who did a drama degree, but pretty handy when it comes to using this little bird’s human voice for medical, health and pharma scripts!
We’re Human – Medical, Health and Pharma Comms Should Be, Too.
When we’re unwell, worried, scared, in pain, the one thing we crave is reassurance. It’s serious, but it’s deeply human too, and anything other than a human voice could send the wrong message. That you don’t care, that you’ve cut corners. Our brains pick up on these seemingly small details, and we sense something’s off. Trust’s eroded and you’ve lost before you’ve even started. Think AI’s cheaper and quicker? No. Not when you count the cost of lost trust, and the hours you have to spend entering endless prompts to get the nuance you need. The nuance and trust you could get in one or two takes with a professional voice over artist who knows what’s needed, isn’t afraid of long words and cares about your audience as if it were her own.
I’ve voiced for Johnson and Johnson, Pfizer, NHS, Bupa, Novo Nordisk, Leo Pharma, Astra Zeneca, Unilever, Alzheimer’s Society, Macular Society and more. Clients in this sector and others, who choose human, because they know AI isn’t human enough.
“Why Do You Love Medical Stuff? It’s Hard Work!”
I know this work isn’t for everyone, one colleague told me that in no uncertain terms! It can be technical, demanding and emotional. But I’ll tell you why I love it. Because I know it has the power to make a real difference. And I care hugely about that. Perhaps it’s no coincidence that I’m the voice of a life-saving defibrillator!

I know you care, too. Otherwise you wouldn’t be working in this sector, and you wouldn’t be reading this blog. Oh and care is for all industries, obvs, so if healthcare isn’t your bag, you’re still in the right place!
Oh and in case you’re wondering, my mum headed for that bright white light in her late forties. I’ll never forget telling her it was ok to let go a few weeks before that. I was in my early 20’s, it was tough. But here’s the thing, stories never end, and nor does love. I pour it all into my life and work. That’s why it feels authentic. I’ve lived it in a way AI never can.
